Booking London Flight
I was looking for a direct flight to Paris from the Southwest USA or from Mexico but a good flight at a reasonable rate was tough to find. I was in Oaxaca in South Central Mexico when I finally booked the flight. The best options were flights from Dallas/Fort Worth or Cancun and it turned out that the best direct flight to Europe I could find at the time was Virgin Atlantic
from Cancun to London.
Sounds like a round about way but from Central
Mexico I had the best choices from either DF, Houston or Cancun. Virgin
Atlantic had the best price so I used the savings to augment the cost
of a week long ruins trip through Veracruz, Tabasco and Campeche.
No denying that a week in London was a nice prelude to a Paris trip. I avoided the half day
waiting to make a plane change through Shannon or Heathrow.

From Gatwick I caught a Southern light
rail surface train to London Bridge Station and then changed to a
second train headed 8 miles southeast to a suburban town where I had
booked B&B lodging.
I could have gone direct to St Pancras Station from Gatwick and booked a Eurostar, high-speed train for the three hour trip to Paris but I wanted to tour London for a few days.

Stonehenge
I spent about a week in London touring
the sights and museums and took a side trip with Evan Evans Tours to
Stonehenge. They do a half-day trip in a comfortable coach and they
offer a good selection of combination trips to Stonehenge and other
sites.

London To Paris Bus
A year ago in September I crossed the channel by boat from Dover on
my way to Paris. I made a return trip via Air
France. This year I wanted to try the bus.
Several bus companies offer the eight
or nine hour trip from London using the Victoria Coach Station on
Victoria Street in London and landing in the Gallieni Coach Station
in Paris. I went by National Express on a new coach with lavatory and
reclining seats.
I had hoped to see some scenery along the way but found the bus
using mainly the high-speed toll roads. The crossing got interesting
in Folkstone, however, when the bus went aboard a train in an
enclosed car for the 25 minute tunnel trip beneath the English
Channel.

I had planned fourteen days in Paris in
a combination of hotel and B&B lodging before heading south down the
Atlantic Coast to Mont Saint Michel, the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, and Biarritz. My sights were set on the Stevenson Trail in the Cevennes, Carcassonne, Madrid in Spain, Barcelona, and the Spanish pilgrimage site of Santiago
Compostella.
London was a pleasant way to start this stay in Europe, however, and Virgin Atlantic made the trip a delight. I spent my days in London visiting the museums and sampling the fish and chip shops and the pub dinner specials.
